Water Rituals is a durational performance where Katy decorates an everyday water source, a sink, with materials she has gathered from a local river that same day. She does her task with as much care and precision as she can with intricate embellishments. On completion of the decorating, the materials are returned to the river they were gathered from.

This performance is inspired by the practice of Well Dressing, a custom belonging to the Peak District and Derbyshire where works of art around a well or spring are created by hand using natural materials by groups of dedicated volunteers. Water Rituals explores what happens if modern humans attempt to have a cultural connection to the natural resources that are vital to continue our everyday lives. It is sited in every day domestic spaces such as bathrooms and toilets that are far from what we consider 'natural' sites, but yet where our relationship to the natures resources such as water couldn't be any more dependent.

Responding to the phenomenon of nature superstition and the status of water as sacred across many cultures around the world, Water Rituals asks if a cultural relationship with nature can transform our resources from commodities into deeply alive and powerful presences? In a time of water stress, scarcity and waste is this act of devotion and effort futile or hopeful?

Water Rituals is part ritual, part spell and part blind belief. Katy takes care to decorate, embellish and beautify an every day site of water in the hope the taps will never run dry.
